Cannes, June 6, 2016. – Painter and Sculptor Cristóbal Gabarrón (Mula, Murcia, 1945), is one of the leading Spanish artists today and picks up where earlier generations of painters like Antoni Tàpies (1923-2012) and Antonio Saura (1930-1998) left off. Due to its modernity and quality, his paintings and sculptures contribute to the present cultural debate in museology. Hence, he is an active participant in current artistic trends, according curator Frédéric Ballester.
Accordingly, the city and museums of Cannes are bringing a major retrospective exhibition with artworks by the Spanish artist that will be seen for the first time ever. This retrospective can be seen in bothpublic places and museums across the city.
The show includes more than 200 artworks by the artist, among them; 67 monumental sculptures, which will be installed in the streets of Cannes as public art; 41 sculptures at museums; over 80 ceramic pieces and 9 paintings -all large-size canvases. One of the highlights is the debut of the painting “Cain’s Altarpiece”, oil and pigment on canvas, measuring 4 x 24 m. This artwork also features a poem thanks to the collaboration with poet Carlos Aganzo.
One of the sculptures featured is an installation made for the Cannes International Film Festival, to mark the 100-year anniversary of Nobel Laureate Camilo José Cela´s birthday, May 11, 2016; “Homage to Cinema, with Camilo José Cela in the background”. This is a steel and polychrome fiberglass sculpture standing 7.25 m high. The City of Cannes and Cristóbal Gabarrón pay tribute with this artwork to the Spanish Nobel Laureate.
La Malmaison Art Center of Cannes is also publishing a book by Manoeuvre Editions; edited by M Bizalion to complete the exhibit. Texts by the curator and director of Malmaison Art Center, Frédéric Ballester; Juan García Sandoval, head curator at the Museums of Murcia City; Vicente Molina Foix, writer, journalist and filmmaker; and poems by writer and Poet, Carlos Aganzo.
The city of Cannes will provide a guide-map to lead visitors to the sculptures throughtout the city, just one of many efforts made to bring light to the full scope of this large retrospective.
