“Abstract Universe,” Carol Brown Goldberg

New York. February 2012. The Gabarron Foundation in New York is pleased to present “Abstract Universe,” An exhibition of large-scale pulverized glass and acrylic paintings by Carol Brown Goldberg. The exhibition is curated by Donald Kuspit, distinguished scholar and art critic, who describes Goldberg’s work as “Baroque Color Field painting” inspired by the artist’s “reflection on the Creation.” “Abstract Universe” opens during New York’s Armory Week and runs through May 8th, 2012. The Opening Reception will be held at The Gabarron – Carriage House Center for the Arts on Thursday, March 8th, from 6 to 8 PM.
When discussing her artistic process, Goldberg states that: “One of the magical qualities of paint is the nuance that can be created with color. It is fascinating to break down hues and tones, to create intensities from light to dark, and to spread them across a large surface. As the fovea focuses on the center of the artwork, it is the peripheral vision that informs us of what we see, and I am captivated by the biological processes of how we see. In my art, I create a system, a layering, that allows me to get into a flow of timelessness, and the repetition of shapes and forms compound the meditative process. I am in awe at the alchemy of paint, and how fluid can be harnessed to create images that transport us into a realm of mystery.”
Carol Brown Goldberg was born in Baltimore, MD. She moved to the Washington, DC metro area after graduating from University of Maryland with a B.A. in American Studies. She then pursued her studies at the Corcoran School of Art under Gene Davis, where she was awarded the Eugene M. Weisz award upon graduation. In 1989 and 1990, Goldberg produced and curated a 14-part lecture series, “Voices of Our Time,” which explored the relationship between art and science. She has taught at American University and University of Maryland, was Artist in Residence at Chautauqua Institute, and is the recipient of the Maryland State Arts Award. She has shown in the U.S. and internationally in over 100 solo and group exhibitions. Her work is included in many museums and private collections, including New Orleans Museum of Art and National Museum for Women in the Arts, as well as sculpture installations at The Kreeger Museum and The Katzen Arts Center at American University.
Donald Kuspit, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Art and Philosophy at Stony Brook University and former A.D. White Professor-at-Large with Cornell University (1991-1997), is a renowned art critic, scholar and author. He has been awarded by the College Art Association (1983), and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (1997), and has received numerous fellowships and grants. Dr. Kuspit has published more than 20 books as well as articles, exhibition reviews, and catalogue essays, including his essay “Reinventing Aura: Carol Goldberg’s Abstract Paintings” in the 2007 catalogue, Carol Brown Goldberg.
