FCG International Sports Award 2010: ALBERTO CONTADOR

For his brilliant records: Two Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España, making him the only Spanish who won the three major Tours. Also by his ability to improve, conquering in 2004 a very serious illness, what led him to create a Foundation for the research on cerebral stroke, Foundation that also distributes bicycles among the poorer classes and promotes the use of this kind of locomotion”, the Jury  bestowed ALBERTO CONTADOR with The Gabarron Foundation 2010 International Sports Award. The Jury met  in Valladolid, July 2, 2010 under its jury President Mrs. Mª Carmen Izquierdo Vergara and with Mrs Ana Rodríguez Manso acting as Secretary. The jury was composed of Mr. Julián de Arriba Crego, Regional  Director of SER in Castilla Leon; Mr. Manuel Erice Oronoz, Vice President of territorial expansion at ABC newspaper  ; Mrs.  MªCarmen Izquierdo Vergara, President of the Spanish Association of Sports Press; Mr. José Miguel Ortega Bariego, President of the Federation of Sports Press of Castilla Leon and President of the Valladolid Association of Sports Press; Mrs. Ana Rodríguez Manso, representative of  Europa Press Castilla León.

 

 

Biography

Alberto Contador Velasco  was born in Madrid on December 6, 1982. At a very young age, he moved with his family to Pinto (Spain), where he still resides.

He has been always attracted to cycling, as a great climber in his youth he was known as the "Little Pantani," virtues that helped him to sign with only 19 years his first professional contract with ONCE-Eroski.

2003 .- 1st  stage of the Tour of Poland.

2004 .- Participating in the  Vuelta a Asturias, Contador had an accident and doctors discovered a brain cavernoma, he had surgery and after one year he returned to the competition.

2005 .- Winner of the Semana Catalana plus a stage, a stage in the Tour Down Under, a stage in the Vuelta al Pais Vasco and a stage atTour of Romandie.

2006 .- One stage of the Tour of Romandie and one of the Tour of Poland.

2007 .- Winner of the Tour de France over a stage; winner of the Paris - Nice over two stages, the winner of the Vuelta  Castilla y León plus stage, winning also a stage in Vuelta a la Comunidad Valenciana.

2008 .- Winner of the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España over two stages, winner of the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon over two stages, and Vuelta al Pais Vasco over two stages. That season, Alberto Contador became the first Spanish cyclist to win the big three: Vuelta, Giro and theTour, and the fifth cyclist in history to achieve this, after the French Anquetil and Hinault, the  Italian Gimondo and the Belgiam Merckx

2009 .- Winner of the Tour de France more two stages, winner of the Vuelta al Pais Vaco and two stages, also winning the Vuleta al Algarve and a stage and two stages in the Paris - Nice and the title of champion of Spain in the form against the clock.

2010 .- Winner of the Paris - Nice and a stage of the Vuelta al Algarve and the  Castilla y Leon and a stage in each one. In Dauphine Libere won two stages, one  in the prologue CRI and the other at the legendary Alpe d'Huez.

Alberto Contador has created a Foundation dedicated to the study, prevention and treatment of cerebral stroke, illness he suffered in his beginnings as a professional cyclist,
in order to raise awareness of the impact of this illness.

Also, the Fundación "Alberto Contador" aims to promote, encourage and popularize cycling as a sport that improves health of the population, and distributes bicycles among the poorer classes and promotes the use of this kind of locomotion and transport.
