FCG International Sports 2006: FUTBOL CLUB BARCELONA
“Due to the success achieved in the 2005-2006 season, on a national and international level, during which it conquered the Champions League and the Spanish League, as well as for its exemplary and emblematic commitment to the resurgence of competitiveness and for its example as a reference in the performance and structure of team sports”, according to the jury that met in Valladolid on June 26, 2006, chaired by, Mr. Conrado Durántez Corral, President of the Spanish Olympic Academy; Mr. Juan María Gastaca Sobrado, Deputy Editor of ABC newspaper; Mr. Amalio Moratalla Anguas, Director General, assistant to Chief Executive Officer of Grupo Recoletos, Mr. José Miguel Ortega Bariego, Head of Sports at Radio Nacional de España in Castilla y León; Mrs. Celsa Villanueva García, Director of Televisión Española in Castilla y León.
When, on 29th November 1899, Hans Gamper founded the Barcelona Soccer Club along with eleven enthusiastic players of what was then an unknown sport called soccer, nobody could have imagined the tremendous repercussions that that initiative would end up having with the passage of time.
During the most difficult moments, it was the flan of Catalonia representing the wishes of freedom of the Catalonian people, a symbolism that would continue to be closely linked to the idiosyncrasy of the Club and among its social mass.
For a whole century, Barcelonism lived moments of glory and of misfortune; brilliant eras end others not so much so, epic triumphs and important defeats. Each one of these instants contributed to defining the personality of the Club, which is unique in the world because of its peculiar characteristics.
The greatness of the Barcelona Soccer Club can be explained, among other factors, by its impressive list of honors, which makes it one of the teams with most awards in the world. With the exception of the Intercontinental Cup, the displays of the Barcelona Team’s museum contain all possible trophies, starting with the European Cup which was won in the mythic final at Wembley.
Apart from this maximum continental award, Barça has undoubtedly won certain prestige in Europe, being the only team on the continent to have participated in the European Competitions uninterruptedly since their creation in 1955. Among the multiple achievements harvested in the Old Continent we can highlight the condition of “King of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup” since the Blaugrana [Blue and Dark Red] Team won four titles.
The Barcelona team accumulated three trophies that correspond to the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (currently the UEFA Cup) in the years 1958, 1960 and 1966. They also won this cup to keep in ownership in 1971 in a special final in which the first winners of this competition, the FC Barcelona, and the most-recent winners, Leeds United, faced each other.
Barça reigns in the Spanish championship, specifically in the King’s Cup, a tournament of which it is the sole leader with 24 titles.
With respect to the Spanish League, one of the historically most difficult competitions for the blaugrana, the explosion that took place in the 1990s with the winning of six titles allowed the Barcelona Soccer Club to reach its centenary with 16 League titles in its honors list.
