The Muram portrays the friendship between Picasso and Cela through letters, photographs and works by both creators
The museum of Cartagena exhibits until November more than a hundred pieces from the Gabarrón Collection whose history has its origin in the meeting that both creators held in Cannes in 1958.
The Ministry of Tourism and Culture opens today at the Regional Museum of Modern Art in Cartagena (Muram) the exhibition'Picasso-Cela: History of a friendship'. Through a hundred or so pieces, including letters, photographs, books, ceramics, drawings and engravings, the exhibition portrays the relationship between two geniuses, between one of the most important and influential artists of the 20th century and the famous writer, the Nobel Prize for Literature, whose friendship began in 1958 after a meeting in the town of'La Californie' in Cannes.
The pieces on display belong to the Cristóbal Gabarrón Foundation's collection and the exhibition, which is produced by Muram and has the collaboration of the Charo and Camilo José Cela Foundation, was today presented by the Councillor Miriam Guardiola, accompanied by Cris Gabarrón.
Specifically, about fifty documents have been gathered from the correspondence between Camilo José Cela and his wife, Charo, and Picasso and Jacqueline. According to Guardiola, these documents "are almost entirely unpublished, since only four of the letters had been exhibited before, and they will allow the public to look back in some way and learn as much as possible about the history of friendship between two unique creators of our country, through the testimonies of their protagonists".
In addition to the correspondence, photographs and almost fifty works by Picasso are shown to the public: ceramic pieces, engravings (linoleum, linographies and drypoint), original drawings made with waxes and posters or posters. The books are also the main characters and, together with two bibliographic works by Picasso ('Les Déjeuners' and'Linogravures'), several copies of books by Cela and Picasso ('Gavilla de fábulas sin amor','Dibujos y escritos' and 'Trozo de piel') are exhibited.
The Minister of Culture stated that "the names of Picasso and Cela are now joining the long list of creators whose works have so far gone through the Muram of Cartagena, the regional museum that has grown the most in recent years and which is becoming, thanks to a quality programme that combines the names of creators with extensive and consolidated careers with those who begin their careers, a reference in the exhibition of contemporary art that, of course, also pays special attention to the creators of the Region of Murcia".
Picasso-Cela: History of a friendship' opens today at 20:00 with the presence of Camilo José Cela's son, Camilo José Cela Conde, and can be visited until next November. The Muram is open from Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 19:00, on Saturdays from 11:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00 and on Sundays and public holidays from 11:00 to 14:00.
