The Spanish artist exhibits 80 original works including paintings, sketches, models and sculptures in a comprehensive exhibition on his work in relation to the United Nations—on view until December 11, 2022.
Curated by Rupert Cefai, the exhibition entitled "The Colors of Hope" completes the artistic program that Malta dedicates to the Spanish artist. This Museum exhibition follows 2 important events: 1) the outdoor exhibition Enlightened Universe, opened on October 21 in the famous St. George square in Valletta ; 2) Ambit Malta on October 29, the fifth edition of Gabarron's proposal 'Ambit', with which he is touring the world and now in the Ġgantija Archaeological Park on the island of Gozo.
Personalities from the world of culture and the arts come together at the Malta National Art Center for Creativity, Rupert Cefai, Gabija Kazlauskiene, Audrey Rose Mizzi, Kylie Vella, Daniel Azzopardi from Spazju Kreattiv, Dr. Trevor Borg from University of Malta, Mary-Ann Cauchi from Arts Council Malta; Anna Calleja, Julia Lundberg, Sheldon Saliba and Paul Scerri among other artists; as well as Pedro Santamaría, Cultural Counselor of the Spanish Embassy in Malta or Cris Gabarrón, president of the Gabarrón Foundation.
In the words of the curator of the exhibition, Rupert Cefai: “in this exhibition you can see the artist's studies and sketches of the work “Enlightened Universe”, which give us an idea of the creative process that led to this creation. When one observes Gabarron's work, one soon sees that it is not easy to define the artist. Is he a painter, a sculptor, a draughtsman, an engraver? Although there is no doubt that he masters all those trades, for me Gabarron is halfway between a poet and a musician, but instead of using words and notes, he uses color to convey meanings, ideas and concepts. Talking with the artist, one soon realizes that Cristóbal identifies with the concepts of his work more than with the techniques necessary to create them. His choice of means is only a means to an end. After contemplating and observing Gabarron's work we are easily reminded that we experience life in color and that color helps us define our own emotions, both individually and collectively. With color, we can identify with a plethora of human emotions, from joy to tragedy and everything in between. In this sense, Gabarron is a storyteller. These human stories created in color are our own stories, wrapped in the same emotions we experience every day. But there is also another aspect, the pigments of the colors used come from elements of nature. And perhaps that is the reason why we give so much meaning to this visual experience that we call color. Perhaps color is our last link with nature that we progressively tend to destroy.”
Once again, culture and art, thought and creativity were the main substance, according to Gabarron, of that hope with which humanity aspired to change course.
