The monumental sculpture Enlightened Universe was inaugurated in Brussels, at the Rond-point Schuman, on October 25 in presence of the artist, Cristobal Gabarron, the EU foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini and UN Brussels Director, Barbara Pesce-Monteiro.
The European Union has supported the use of this emblematic space in a symbolic nod to strengthen its commitment to the values of the UN, organisation that inaugurated in 2015 the artistic work of Gabarron on the occasion of its 70th anniversary and this year celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Enlightened Universe is powerful for its dimensions and beauty and for the message that lies behind it. “It wants to express that only together we will have a better and fairer future world", says the sculptor.
Federica Mogherini highlighted the participative aspect of this art installation in her speech: "Looking at the world you see yourself. This is a very powerful appeal to individual responsibility. These triangles of mirrors reflect our own faces. It depends on us, on the approach we take if the common global picture is good or not"
Definitely, it will not go unnoticed its metallic sphere of more than 6 meters in diameter around which are grouped 70 human-sized figures that join their hands to create a human chain and “demonstrate the importance of creating a more inclusive world. A world in which we have a shared responsibility to protect our planet" - emphasized Barbara Pesce-Monteiro.
After the inspiring opening ceremony, “Enlightened Universe” will remain in Brussels as a symbolic reminder of the necessity to fight for the better future every single day. It is an interactive sculpture and its visitors can take part and further the cause until November 22.
